YEARBOOK REMINDER!
Senior pictures are due by October 31st. Also senior parents should start collecting and sending in the PDA page materials if they would like to dedicate a page to their loved ones. Full color page is $250, half page is $150 and a quarter page is $100.00. Best to get this over before the holidays. PDA’s are due January 15th, 2010, along with any final yearbook orders. None will be available at the end of the year this time.

Lindbergh High School SkillsUSA Club
SkillsUSA Club is a great resource for the community! We make banners, posters, plaques, t-shirts, and sweaters! We can special order many other items, such as acrylic awards. We also offer screen printing for T-Shirts, hoodies, and more.
We also do work for other groups in the community and district as well, we aren’t limited to just work with LHS. Most orders take less than two weeks.
All of our jobs are designed and printed by students. The profit made goes to the LHS SkillsUSA chapter, which is used to fund community service projects, and send students to SkillsUSA leadership conferences and competitions. Thank you for your support.

GRAD NIGHT GENERAL FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITIES
Dealing for Dollars - Training Date Monday, Nov. 16, 6:30pm, LHS Commons
West Coast Entertainment offers an opportunity to pay down the ticket price. They are in need of Blackjack Dealers for their party events this holiday season, and are willing to train Grad Night parents to work at these parties. For each night, you will receive a $50.00 credit, which will pay down your total ticket price. Kids 16 years and over can train with their parents/guardians. Training usually takes one to two three hours sessions before the planned event.
A training date has been scheduled for Monday, November 16th, at 6:30pm, in the LHS Commons. We must have at least 10-15 parents at this training session. Mock blackjack tables will be set up, and veteran dealers provide step-by-step instructions.
If you are interested in participating, need a refresher course, OR if you have already trained and would like to sign up for West Coast December holiday events, please contact Carrie Wong at Error! The biggest benefit for participating in "Dealing for Dollars" is that you can have the entire ticket paid off, with no cost to you. Training is free. For example, one couple worked together at the holiday events. At $50 per person, per event, they paid off their child's ticket in just two events!

Reflections
The Reflections program is alive and well at the high school level. The theme this year is "Beauty is . . . ". If your child is interested in entering a work of art in the form of a drawing, painting, literature, photograph, musical piece, or other venue, entry forms are available in the school's library. All entries must have a completed Official Entry Form, and must be signed by the student and parent/guardian. Please turn in all entries to the main office by Monday, November 9, 2009.
The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA student arts recognition program. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works. Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme. Information and entry packets are also available online at:

The Tiffany Park PTA is in need of high school students to volunteer to assist with the Tiffany Park Elementary Harvest Carnival on Friday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. Students will be helping out with various games and activities. WINTER SPORTS
If you are planning on playing Boys’ Basketball, Boys' Swim, Girls’ Basketball, Gymnastics or Wrestling, please plan to have your physicals done as soon as possible if you haven’t had one already. Athletic clearance for Gymnastics is November 2 – 6 and for all other sports, athletic clearance is November 9 -13. Please do not wait until the last day to clear for winter sports. There will not be any one day clearance for fees, signatures, etc. You must pay your sports fee and ASB , and clear all fines . Any questions, please see Mrs. Clark.

This is a reminder for students to check the detention lists posted around the building. A new list is posted by the end of each Tuesday afternoon (students will note a color change). The Money Maze is presented by the College Planning Network, a local nonprofit organization that since 1987, has helped families plan for college. The two-hour workshop brings students and their parents or guardians together with CPN representatives and the Renton School District for information gathering, questions and answers, and hands-on planning. The workshop allows families to begin planning early to take full advantage of college aid opportunities.

Five Hazen High School seniors and a Lindbergh High School senior have been named Commended Scholars by the College Board. The students received the honor based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarshp Qualifying Test. Only two-thirds of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the test receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. The students are: Hazen students: Monica Razniewski, Colin Jones, Laura Kooiman, Alexander Lohrer and Brian Goddard; and Lindbergh senior Casey Penk.

Renton School Board resolution opposes Initiative 1033 on Nov. 3 ballot
October 15, 2009―Renton School Board members at their recent meeting took action against Initiative 1033, the Tim Eyman-backed tax-reform initiative on the Error! Hyperlink reference not valid..
The board joins a broad coalition of state business, labor, community and education organizations that oppose the initiative which would cap the yearly growth of state, county and city general funds at the rate of inflation, plus population growth.
Opponents say the initiative will create greater need for statewide cuts, which would further devastate public services and education, and impede recovery from the recession.
Eyman has said the initiative would lower property taxes and provide another barrier to keep state and local officials from raising taxes.
Renton School Board’s legislative representative Pam Teal worked on the wording of the Board’s resolution which states the measure would further erode the state’s P-12 education funding, causing deeper cuts to the district’s budget.
State economic forecasters have predicted that the initiative would eliminate most if not all of the state school levy funding in five to six years: an elimination of 25 percent of state school funding that is sent directly to districts.

City of Renton - CodeRED - Emergency Notification System
On September 1, 2009 the City of Renton launched a “reverse 9-1-1” notification system for use during emergencies, which allows city officials the ability to deliver urgent pre-recorded emergency telephone messages to targeted areas or to the entire city at a rate of up to 60,000 calls per hour. Called CodeRED, this high-speed telephone emergency notification service can be used in the event of severe weather, hazardous materials spills, floods or other emergencies that can affect people’s safety or health.

Film Frenzy Curvee Awards
Last weekend, nearly 20 aspiring filmmakers frantically ran throughout the streets of Renton as part of the 2nd annual Renton Film Frenzy, a competition where filmmakers had just 50 hours to shoot, edit and submit a 4-minute film about Renton.
On Tuesday night, Oct. 27, these filmmakers―which includes seven students from Nelsen Middle School, Renton and Hazen high schools, Kentridge High School and Northshore Junior High ― will be competing for $1,700 in cash prize plus the coveted “Curvee” awards, crafted by local glassworks studio Uptown Glassworks. The top ten films produced during the competition will be screened.
The event is free and open to the public.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT I-1033 NOW AVAILABLE ON WSPTA WEBSITE
Initiative 1033, the latest Tim Eyman effort to limit government spending, was not on the formal agenda at the Legislative Assembly, but was a major topic among those in attendance because of its potential adverse effects on public education and other services important to children. If adopted, the initiative would limit the total revenue that could be expended in any calendar year to the amount received in 2009, plus an adjustment based on a national inflation index and any increase in the general population.
The Office of Financial Management has estimated that this initiative would deprive publically funded education and health services almost $6 billion in support over the next six years. As reported in earlier editions, the WSPTA Board of Directors has gone on record as opposing the initiative at its August meeting. In response to requests from many in attendance at the Legislative Assembly, we have established a separate page on our website at Error! Hyperlink reference not valid..
